Dutch White Clover Trifolium repens
- Produces white round blooms from late spring into fall at 2.5–4" unless allowed to grow taller.
- Vital nectar source for pollinators including the monarch butterfly.
- Grows better in shade than grass and tolerates foot traffic and pets.
- Above-ground runners choke out weeds like dandelions over time.
- Fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the ground, reducing fertilizer needs once established.
Self-Heal Prunella vulgaris
- Produces light purple blooms in early to mid-summer at 2–6" tall.
- Beneficial nectar source for a variety of pollinators.
- Grows well in part shade to full sun in sand, clay, or loam soils.
Fine Fescue Grass Blend
Our Mow Less grass seed mix is a blend of fine fescues with better shade tolerance than bluegrass and requires much less fertilizer and mowing. Mow regularly for the first season to allow all varieties to mature. Mow at your highest setting a few times per year to allow light and air to the soil surface.
How to Seed Your Flawn
Seed in spring or late summer to early fall. Spread over existing grass after mowing to 0.5" and raking to loosen soil. Water lightly but frequently after seeding. Continue to mow for one year at 2–3" until flowers are fully established.
Maintaining Your Flawn
- Mow at 2–3" for the first year. Once established, mow higher and less often for more flowers, or shorter and more often for a traditional lawn look.
- Do not use pesticide weed or insect killers. Hand weed if necessary.
- White clover fixes nitrogen into the ground — fertilizer needs are minimal once established.
- If seeding a new lawn or bare soil area, increase the seeding rate by 2–5x.
